In another segment of “what the…?”, this from the Rocky Mountain News http://www.rockymountainnews.c…
A Colorado banker made a controversial remark about Barack Obama at a banquet honoring Hank Brown as the 2008 Citizen of the West on Wednesday night.William Farr, 68, founder of Centennial Bank of the West, was reading a number of congratulatory telegrams from various people in his introduction of Brown at the Adams Mark Hotel downtown.
Among them was one he claimed came from the White House.
“They’re going to have to change the name of the building if Obama gets elected,” he said.
When no one laughed, Farr commented, “C’mon, that was funny.”
As the banquet ended, Farr, when questioned by a reporter about the remark, apologized.
“I apologize for that,” he said. “I mistook it to be humorous, but it was something I shouldn’t have said.”
Each year, the annual dinner helps kick off the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo, with proceeds benefiting the National Western Scholarship Trust.
There was no immediate response from the Obama campaign in Colorado.
Farr’s father, W.D. “Bill” Farr was honored as the Citizen of the West in 1999.
The Farrs are longtime ranchers in Greeley, and the elder Farr was credited for being the driving force behind the Big Thompson water project which brought Western Slope water to the Front Range.
The younger Farr founded the Centennial Bank of the West in 1992. But prior to his banking career, he had been active with the cattle industry, serving as chairman of the U.S. Meat Export Federation, on the executive committee of the National Cattlemen’s Association and as president of the Colorado Cattle Feeders Association.

….of paying attention to Obama’s heritage when convenient? “Oh, now that mention it, I do notice his skin is dark.”
Not a knee slapper, but not racist.
Apparently by the end of the dinner Mr. Farr thought otherwise.
Who knows what alleged evils lurk in the hearts of men?
We, as a society, need to lighten up a bit. We need to be able to laugh at ourselves, stupid and occassionally racist jokes and all. Only by the occassional gaff do we find where we stand.
To way that the White House would be renamed the Black House is racist? PUH-leeze. Only if you think that being black is a lesser value than being white. Or pretending that Obama doesn’t have African blood in him.
Did he say that Aunt Jemima was going to be the new Press Secretary? Or make fun of black dialect? Or chittlins? Those types of things are racist and/or in vey poor taste.
The joke was not, even if he tried to back peddle later.
I guess that means free pancakes for the reporters. That is great as it will mean more coverage. There is not a reporter alive that can resist free food.
You should be ashamed of yourself.
Chris Rock saying it, especially after Obama has won – funny (not a lot, but at least a little).
An old white guy saying it – not funny.
Why we accept that, not funny.
It’s either racist, or it’s not. It’s either funny or it’s not. It doesn’t matter who says it. If Farr is a racist for saying it, then in your example Chris Rock would be too.
We need to stop this crap of having one set of rules for one race and another for the other. If white people shouldn’t say the “N” word, then neither should blacks. If white people can’t make a joke about it being the “black house”, then neither can blacks.
I don’t see any reason for having such double standards
I make a joke about nerds to other programmers – it’s funny. Someone who’s in sales makes the same joke and it tends to piss programmers off.
Growing up in Hawaii everyone there were lots of racila jokes because of the mix. And the way it was taken was make a joke about your own race – funny, make a joke about another – derogatory.
It’s like the rule that I can call my brother an idiot, but if you call him one I’m going to be mad.

The crux of the question is “do two wrongs make a right?”
The answer is no.
Either something is racist or it’s not. Burning a cross is someone’s yard is racist, whether it’s a white doing it to a black or a black doing it to a white. If we are going to be a true color blind society, we need to stop excusing actions that are wrong because of someone’s race and apply the same standards to everyone.
Two of my daughters are blonde. One of them loves to tell blonde jokes. But I told her one once and she was not amused.
Race is still a major issue in this country. We are making rapid strides toward it being less major, but it is still major. And therefore we do need to take context into account.
As to true color blind, it will never happen. We judge people based on height, hair style, physical build, etc. I’ll be happy when skin color falls down to that level.
But as Dave Berry once said – no woman ever told Brad Pitt “put your shirt on and tell us some jokes.” They’ll always choose Brad Pitt over Dave Berry.
What does context have to do with anything? All you are doing is explaining that if a person belongs to a minority group, they can make fun of their own group and it’s ok. I’m saying that shouldn’t be the case. People either need to let things slide more, or anything that’s offensive to anyone should be off limits.
For example-I make fun of myself and my Mormon beliefs from time to time. It helps people realize that I won’t get offended by people who hold different beliefs. But today someone joked about how I wouldn’t be afraid to die because I would get my own planet.
I could have easily gotten offended. But how could I? I make fun of myself, how do I have the right to get mad at someone else for doing the same thing.
Likewise if the black community uses the “N” word, they can’t get upset when someone else does. The word doesn’t change it’s meaning if someone else delivers it. It’s still a racist word.
But because of context people have justified a double standard. The double standard needs to end. You are not any more justified in saying something because of the group you belong to.
Growing up in a mulit-racial society (Hawaii) I found that context mattered – for race, for family, for lots of things.
As to should it? I think it’s legit. It comes back to I can say things about my brother that I would be upset if others said them.
Let’s call it a draw, we’ve started repeating ourselves. 🙂
I have had this conversation on this site before. Nobody White can use the word “Nigger” or “Nigga” in the presence of a Black person and not get a tongue lashing at the very least. The word “Nigger” is the one word, that in some states, the courts consider a physical assault. This is because of the history of the word and the history of America.
Yes, Blacks use the word. I do not have enough time to explain it to all of you why it is OK for us to use it to each other.
However, the bigger question that I raise on this site is, “Why do you want to use it, if you are White?”
With that out of the way, we should not want a color blind society. We should strive for a society that enjoys and respects our differences and finds beauty in all of us.
I can guarantee that after Barack becomes this nation’s first Black Democratic Nominee it will take about a week for someone to call him a Nigger at a fundraiser for the other side that gets caught on tape.
Hey, don’t get me wrong. This country IS moving forward. Unfortunately, our past still haunts us.
Wait, its OK to trash her, she’s a Republican.
I am not saying it couldn’t happen or hasn’t happened, nor would I be less upset if it did. I have numerous times written about how left treats her. I have been shocked by some comments.
However, more of my liberal associates have relationships and friendships with people of different backgrounds. My conservative associates, for the most part, have relationships with people who look the same (there are exceptions). And because of those relationships, liberals they tend to be more understanding of the pain that racism inflicts.
The only racial slurs that are tolerated in this country are against black conservatives. Clarence Thomas: Lawn Jockey, Uncle Tom, Happy Negro.
Condoleeza Rice: House Slave, Brown Sugar.
Michael Steele: Oreo. etc.
Only liberals are allowed to use hate speech, because they are the anointed.
(Bring me some more holy oil while you’re at it.)
someone who was so focused on a rising china as National Security Advisor that she pulled resources from containing radical Islam. Someone who doesn’t know the meaning of torture. And someone who was at the Heart of every Bush decision of the last 8 years.
No race: no gender
I don’t think he’s that funny.
But, MMMMMmmmm, Dave Barry!!!
He can come up and make me laugh any old time.
A flat joke, maybe, but not racist.
The fact is for 220 years, the “White House” has been the “White Men’s House — no girls allowed, blacks and Hispanics must use the servants entrance.”
Face it, that’s shameful.
Now, for the first time ever, we have a chance to elect a woman or a black man to the White Man’s Only house.
I happen to favor the woman but I respect the black man.
What I want to know is how, given the possibility of two such historic breakthroughs, John Edwards has the gall to say that making him the 44th white man to hold the lease on the white house makes him the candidate of “change.”
I’m always right. 🙂
It always gets the wrong answer…
The one good thing is that 90% of the room immediately recognized the comment was stupid and offensive. Too bad it wasn’t 100%, but it was exactly a progressive crowd.
It was stupid as well as offensive. Nice to know most did not laugh.
I went to the rodeo two years ago and took my wife, who had never been. Some kid from Mississippi was riding a bull, fell off and got stomped in the abdomen by the bull and then started going into convulsions.
Then (I think it was Roach who was announcing) went into some sort of ridiculous plea on the PA system for everyone in the audience to pray and use the power of jesus to heal him.
Oh, the stock show.
my husband, daughter, and I were watching the bronco riding (is that it? the bucking horses?). One of the times the horse bucked, he came down and his forehead hit the railing full force. Down he went, never got up, and he was put down a short while later. Blech! It was stomach turning.
shortly after the rodeo incident, one of the “Westernaires” fell of her horse and went out on a stretcher. At that point my wife just wanted to go home.
She will tell you they don’t teach horsemanship skills, only fast riding. If you’ve ever watched their practices on a Saturday, it’s a wonder they don’t have more injuries, human and equine alike. More blech.
And, yes, we left after the horse was removed from the arena. (Thankfully, he was put down away from public view.)
My daughter was in Westernaires for several years and quit because of the unsafe riding they were teaching. We also witnessed the death of a Westernaires rider, Katie Nielsen, back during the mid-90s; she was in a fourth of July show doing a dangerous trick on a horse that was clearly unsuited for the skill, spooked and dragged her to her death. The Westernaires assigned to the area didn’t know how to stop a runaway horse. 4-H does a much better job of teaching how to ride and proper horse safety.
I think my daughter got into Westernaires in ’97 or ’98. It was probably a year or two after Katie’s death. She really loved the horses and couldn’t get enough. We ended up leasing a horse for her at a stable in Arvada and she pretty much lived there in the summers. She took riding lessons at the stable and that’s where she learned horsemanship skills.
I’m sure some of the adults involved with Westernaires had horse handling skills, but I always felt they attracted people who wanted an opportunity to hollar at kids and be bossy. I couldn’t believe the way some of the kids were treated by the instructors and leaders. It was really obnoxious.
Yet, few parents were willing to say anything for fear of having their kid be punished by not being advanced to a higher level or having their kid get treated even worse.
My daughter always seemed to stay out of anyone’s cross hairs so she was never at the receiving end of the verbal abuse that was sometimes dished out.
Glen Keller marched around like he was some sort of grand pooh-bah. Of course, that’s how so many of the adults treated him, too. Even though Westernairs is a nonprofit membership organization, I don’t ever recall seeing financial records. Nobody ever pushed them on that too — me included.
There are good things about Westernaires, but, IMO, it’s not a very open or pleasant organiziation.
There are many wonderful coaches in kids soccer but there are also some complete bozos, especially managing the whole thing. But you don’t dare speak up as your kid then gets the shaft.
I would have never Know about Hank Brown getting this award if not for this controversy.
